 Mass ECAN December News

This time of year, we turn our thoughts towards what brings us gratitude and joy. I’m very thankful for this wonderful community of practitioners and all that you do to advance climate adaptation. It’s not easy work and I hope that you find time to rest over the winter break! It has been wonderful getting to see so many of you in person again this year and I can’t wait to see your friendly faces at events in the coming year. Happy holidays! Here’s to a happy close to 2022!

2022 Highlights
It was a busy year for Mass ECAN! See below and our website for highlights of what we accomplished together.
Resistance, Resilience, and Transformation Publication

We are pleased to share a new resource: Adaptation Actions for Resistance, Resilience, and Transformation. This resource provides an overview of climate adaptation actions across a spectrum from resisting change to active transformation, and now includes example projects in specific ecosystems.

The overview was created through a collaboration of Mass ECAN, the Northeast Regional Invasive Species & Climate Change (RISCC) Management Network, and the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center. The examples actions were created with many partners (look for their logos on each page)!

Member Spotlight
Every month, we highlight someone in our community of practice so you can learn about a variety of adaptation work and "meet" a new colleague!

Susie Bresney
MA Water Resources Program Manager
Merrimack River Watershed Council

Bio: Susie is passionate about protecting the environment and restoring rivers and people’s connection to them. At MRWC, Susie works with community members, municipalities, watershed organizations, state and federal agencies, and local volunteers to implement nature-based solutions to flooding, water quality, climate vulnerability, habitat degradation, and other threats to the Merrimack and its tributaries. Previously, she worked as a scientist at the Stockholm Environment Institute, developing models and analyses for water resource management decision-making from local to national scales around the world. Susie holds a B.S. in Environmental Geoscience from Boston College and a M.S. in Water Resource Engineering from Tufts University.

Climate adaptation projectAs a part of the Division of Ecological Restoration’s Partnerships Program, Susie is leading the development of a Partnership across the MA portion of the Merrimack River Watershed. She is working at the sub-watershed scale to understand local challenges and needs, and bringing together agencies and organizations to develop regional restoration goals and priorities, facilitate cross learning, and increase capacity to implement restoration projects and nature-based solutions on the ground. The efforts of the Partnership and the projects implemented will improve stream habitat and river functioning and ultimately make Merrimack communities more resilient to climate change.
