Member Spotlight
Every month, we highlight someone in our community of practice so you can learn about a variety of adaptation work and "meet" a new colleague!

Billie Li
Berkshire Clean, Cold, Connected Partnership Restoration Coordinator at Housatonic Valley Association

Bio: Billie is working to build regional capacity in order to implement water restoration projects in the Berkshires. Before joining HVA, she worked as a consulting engineer focusing on municipal wastewater and stormwater projects, and as a conservation planner helping farmers mitigate their impact on natural resources. Billie has enjoyed working on a variety of projects under the goal of building a more climate-resilient world. In her spare time, Billie enjoys rock climbing and fly fishing.

Climate adaptation projectThe Berkshire Clean, Cold, Connected Partnership envisions a region that is ecologically resilient to climate change and a community that is interconnected with the health and well-being of our watersheds. The Partnership is currently working on a regional priority culvert replacement initiative to improve climate/flood resiliency and aquatic organism passage. There are several towns in the Housatonic Watershed that are currently in the Final Design and Permitting phase, and several towns in the Hoosic and Farmington Watersheds in the early stages of the Assessment phase. Contact Billie to learn more.

The Mass ECAN Reader

In case you've been wondering what to read next...

  • 2022 MA Climate Assessment Released: The assessment is the result of a statewide process to understand how climate change affects people, environments, and infrastructure in our state. This will inform the 2023 update of the State Hazard Mitigation & Climate Adaptation Plan (SHMCAP).
  • Resilient Lands Initiative: The actions outlined in the RLI Vision will help the Commonwealth achieve its climate goals, reduce vulnerability to climate impacts such as urban heat islands and coastal flooding, improve water quality, and protect wildlife and natural systems.
  • Healthy Soils Action Plan: Healthy soils are critical with more flooding, droughts and heat waves. The Plan is an assessment of the condition of the state's soils and a blueprint for how we can effectively conserve, restore, and manage our soils.
  • COP 15: Read about the outcomes of the UN Biodiversity Conference that took place in Montreal and this statement from The Nature Conservancy.

2022 Highlights
It was a busy year for Mass ECAN in 2022!
See our website post for highlights of what we accomplished together.

Including -- a new resource on Adaptation Actions for Resistance, Resilience, and Transformation! This resource provides an overview of climate adaptation actions across a spectrum from resisting change to active transformation, and now includes example projects in specific ecosystems. This was created by Mass ECAN, the Northeast Regional Invasive Species & Climate Change (RISCC) Management Network, and the Northeast Climate Adaptation Science Center. The examples actions involved many partners (look for their logos on each page)!
